Support our walk for breast cancer to help save lives.
This June, Kim, Theresa, Sarah and Kaitie, with their families, are joining the 100km Big Bold Walk to raise funds for critical breast cancer research!
Breast cancer affects many Australian women and men, with most people having a loved one impacted. Unfortunately, in 2026, breast cancer has been at the forefront of our minds.
In early 1998 at 33 years old, Kim was diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer, while Sarah was a toddler and Kaitie only 6 months old. This was on the back of a strong maternal history of breast cancer, with Kim’s mum, Dot, diagnosed twice in her lifetime.
Thankfully Kim had been well since her cancer. In 2025, when a friend bravely shared their diagnosis online, the Dalton family revisited genetic testing. Kim was diagnosed with the PALB2 gene mutation, which is 55% lifetime risk of breast cancer (general population risk is around 12%). Kim made the decision to undergo a risk-reducing double mastectomy in early 2026. As a result of this surgery, it was coincidentally found she had an early stage cancer, which thankfully does not require further treatment.
It was positive news when Kaitie was found not to have the mutation. Unfortunately in early 2026 Sarah’s results returned positive for the PALB2 mutation. She now must consider her risk management and start screening at the age of 30.
Unfortunately, Sarah’s mother-in-law Theresa was diagnosed with breast cancer just weeks after Kim’s surgery. Theresa is now facing this new diagnosis, recovery from surgery and ongoing treatment. Theresa has had the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial conducted by Breast Cancer Trials Australia.
Clinical trials and research are essential for the progression of medicine, and support of those like Theresa, to access new therapies and other interventions.
