I'm walking 200km this June to raise funds for Breast Cancer Trials.
They are currently raising funds for a new drug to treat Triple Negative Breast Cancer which is the same type that I was diagnosed with at the end of March.
5 things you should never say to your GP. Number 4 is the
one that catches the smartest women. And it’s quietly costing them time.
Your GP is on your side and they take you seriously. But they can only act on
what you give them, and vague information gets a vague plan.

Precise information gets a precise plan.
The difference is in the language.
1. “My mammogram came back clear.”
If your breasts are dense, clear doesn’t mean what you think it means. Dense
tissue and cancer both show up white.
Say instead: “What’s my breast density, and given that, should I be having an
ultrasound or MRI as well?”
2. “Breast cancer doesn’t run in my
family.”
Most women only count their mum’s side, and only count breast cancer.
Say instead: “There’s history of cancer on my dad’s side. Does that change how
I should screen for cancer?”
3. “I do everything right so I’m low
risk and screening isn’t necessary”
Risk isn’t a feeling, it’s a number, and most women have never had theirs
worked out.
Say instead: “Can we run a validated risk tool like iPrevent so we’re working
from my actual numbers?”
4. “I’m sure it’s just hormonal.”
It often is. But hormonal and serious can feel exactly the same, and only one
of them is safe to assume.
Say instead: “This could be hormonal, but I’d like it ruled out properly before
we put it down to that.”
5. “I’m too young to worry about this.”
The cancers that occur in younger women tend to be faster growing and more
aggressive. New breast symptoms (at any age) should not be ignored.
Say instead: “What’s the right imaging for someone my age, since a mammogram
alone may not be enough?”
You deserve an appointment that ends with a precise next step. Not a “let’s see
how you go and come back in twelve months.
